Ireland – Ballybeg Abbey & Buttevant

While in Ireland, one cannot oversee all these lovely castles, the ruins, the stones of history lying around in the open for willing eyes to see!

We definitely were willing!

Ballybeg Abbey is near Buttevant in the County Cork. We spotted these ruins completely by accident. There are near a street, but while walking among the ruins there’s actually no one disturbing your silent watch of this former Abbey. This castle also shows you one of the finest surviving medieval dovecots in Ireland.

Buttevant itself is a small town you pass through with your car. Cill na Mullach (“Church of the Summits”) as Buttevant is called in Irish offers visitors a nice church and next to it  a 13th century Franciscan Friary. While I don’t think it’s worth to drive to Buttevant just to take a look at these two historic places, when you do pass through anyway it’s well worth a short stop to explore them further.
